| A security token (or authentication token) is a small hardware device that the owner carries to authorise access to a network service. It is a representation of a set of claims that are made by a client that can include a name, password, identity, key, certificate, group, privilege, and so on. |

| Unlike a password, a security token is a physical object. Security tokens provide an extra level of assurance through a method known as two-factor authentication: the user has a personal identification number (PIN), which authorises them as the owner of that particular device; the device then displays a number which uniquely identifies the user to the service, allowing them to log in. The identification number for each user is changed frequently, usually every five minutes or so. Thus a USB Security Token can replace passwords with a small USB key, thereby replacing all of passwords security weaknesses with a single key that can never be duplicated. A security token service is just a web service that issues a token. This security token can be used to communicate between the sender and the target Web service until it expires. |
