Content management system (CMS) allows the non-technical author to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a website without needing the expertise of a webmaster. There are two main types of CMS systems. An offline CMS has to be installed at the server end and It requires a technical know-how to get it up-and-running correctly and safely. An online CMS is a system that is accessed directly from a website, from within a standard web browser. It is much easier to begin working with, as the system is already installed on the server, and it can be accessed from anywhere, at anytime.

There are also other types of content management systems:
- Web content management (WCM) allows the non-technical creators of content to manipulate a website's content directly.
- Transactional content management systems (TCMS) allow companies to manage e-commerce transactions.
- Integrated content management systems (ICMS) allow companies to manage enterprise documents and content.
- Publications management systems (PCMS) allow companies to manage the publications content life cycle.
- Enterprise content management systems (ECMS) support both the web and publications content life cycle.
