Network security is the effort to create a secure computing platform, designed so that agents (users or programs) cannot perform actions that they are not allowed to perform, but can perform the ones that they are allowed to. The actions in question can be reduced to operations of access, modification and deletion. Network security can be seen as a sub field of security engineering, which looks at broader security issues such as enterprise network security, wireless network security, internet network security or computer network security.

There are two basic types of network security that must be emphasised when internet security is a concern, transit security and traffic regulation, which when combined can help guarantee that the right information is securely delivered to the right place. It should be apparent that there is also a need for ensuring that the hosts that receive the information will properly process it, this raises the entire specter of host security: a wide area which varies tremendously for each type of system. With the growth in business use of the Internet, network security technology is rapidly becoming crucial to the development of the Internet.
