BT is set to invest £1.5 million over the next four years to increase the
speed of its broadband offering.
The company has said due to improved managed bandwidth services they aim to get a fibre network available to ten million people by 2012.
It is thought the firm will make the services available to other internet service providers, with these companies also being able to put their own fibre networks in.
BT expects to increase its current speed of 40MB to 60MB with new technologies, but the fibre network could increase this to 100MB.
Ian Livingston said in a statement: "We now want to make a step-change in broadband provision which will offer faster speeds than ever before. This is a bold step by BT and we need others to be just as bold."
The firm expects to spend £100 million on capital expenditure on the 2008/09 and 2009/10 period, increasing to £800 million over the following three years.
It was recently reported small to medium business are not happy with the managed bandwidth services they receive.
