More than half of the British population does not trust that businesses are doing enough to keep details safe, a new study has shown.
A survey by VeriSign showed that 57 per cent of Britons said their data was not being held securely enough, lagging behind the rest of Europe which was more trusting.
Denmark were the most trusting nations, with 20 per cent saying they did not trust businesses.
Jon Kerr, SSL manager of VeriSign, said: "I think it's in no small part down to consumer perception. Maybe businesses in Denmark [for example] have adopted security standards quicker than in other countries like the UK, so consumers get the message."
Mr Kerr added that the recent losses by the government would not have helped public perception of security.
He added that businesses need to keep up-to-date and adopt best practice methods to gain the public's trust.
A recent YouGov survey showed that billions of pounds is being risked by internet users in the UK using poorly protected websites, reports IT Pro.
