If the broadband industry continues to promote itself on the theoretical maximum speeds rather than realistic ones then businesses are likely to be disappointed, says one expert.
The technology is in place to achieve faster speeds, but internet service providers (ISPs) should make sure they can provide the speeds they advertise, says Broadband Choices.
Michael Phillips, product director with Broadband Choices, said: "What will happen is - and all ISPs suffer from this - customers won't get what they're promised.
"I think the industry can definitely catch up, the technology is always going to change and that means higher speeds. The problem is that the industry likes to promote itself based on a theoretical maximum that isn't realistic in many cases."
Mr Phillips added that many new ISPs come to the market having been released before they are ready, meaning "people are often very disappointed".
uSwitch's latest customer satisfaction survey found that half of consumers are not happy with the service they receive from their broadband provider.
