VoIP is to become increasingly complicated as analysts predict the new wave of internet spam and phishing schemes will soon be targeted at the burgeoning voice technology.
Internet analysts at Ovum said the technology is at risk of receiving a new type of voice spam and voice phishing scams that could allow third parties to gain sensitive information.
Ovum principal analyst Graham Titterington warned: "Vendors are focusing largely on the dangers of interception of communications on the wire, which we don’t think is the main problem at all."
Many companies have kept VoIP technology on their intranets where potential security breaches are contained within the company infrastructure.
However, intrusive marketing calls and static lines are not the only issues in VoIP.
Telephone phishing, where people give out sensitive personal information like bank accounts, is the more likely threat given people's heightened trust of the voice communication over their email.
"Vendors are pushing their existing security products to businesses, but these products focus on the public Internet, which is not normally a component of enterprise VoIP networks," added Mr Titterington.
He advised that service providers must identify and ward off the perceived risks to set an example as the telephony role model.
