Businesses are still failing to comply with the managed data standards of the Payment Card Industry's (PCIs) security guidelines, according to research.
NetIQ has found many businesses are not complying with the rule saying they do not know when they will become compliant.
This comes as new standards are set to be introduced on June 30th, which will set security standards for web applications.
PCI standards relate to security management, policies, procedures, network architecture and software design, among others.
Europe is also lagging behind US standards, with it having half the number of compliant companies.
However, European businesses were attempting to make themselves compliant, with half saying they had been trying over the past six months.
Businesses also felt the threat of fines was not a real one, with many thinking they would not be issued or exceptions would be made.
The PCI Security Standards Council was founded by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International MasterCard and Visa.
