Almost half of all IT workers have revealed they have searched the network to access private information.
Companies may want to boost their managed network security, after a survey from Cyber-Ark revealed privileged passwords are also not changed very frequently.
Thirty per cent of people said they changed their password every quarter, with nine per cent revealing they never did.
Mark Fullbrook, UK director of Cyber-Ark, said: "When it comes down to it, IT has essentially enabled snooping to happen. All you need is access to the right passwords or privileged accounts and you're privy to everything that's going on within your company."
He added that firms need to "wake up" to increasing security levels and assess who has access to what information.
Mr Fullbrook said by controlling privileged passwords a firm can reduce the risk of snooping, sabotage and hacking.
A survey by Siemon has revealed that IT bosses in Europe are most concerned about security in their firm, above other threats.
