Nearly half of all companies overlook the carbon saving which can be made in the IT department.
When businesses look to cut their carbon footprint they fail to take into account IT and telecommunications, according to research carried out by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
The study found that chief information officers (CIOs) are not as involved in the carbon cutting process, with only half of bosses consulting them.
It was found that 57 per cent of companies have plans in place to reduce their carbon footprint, but less than half consult IT departments.
Robin Brew, editorial director at the Economist Intelligence Unit, said: "There is a lot of talk about reducing carbon footprints in today's organisations, but not much action.
"Putting technology to work in this endeavour offers a simple, effective way to move from rhetoric to action."
Measures to reduce the carbon footprint which have been adopted include an increased use of conference calling to save on flights and travel.
Recently UK companies came ahead of their European counterparts in environmental consciousness, according to a poll.
