Supermarket chain Somerfield has announced plans for a pilot WiMAX solution for its Manchester sites.
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a high-speed wireless internet standard based on IEEE 802.16, and is being considered by Somerfield as its primary IT connection for areas where conventional DSL broadband is not available and as a back-up in areas where it is.
The supermarket has enlisted Vanco to provide the service, and the roll-out will begin in March.
Over the course of the contract between the two firms, Somerfield will see wireless internet solutions deployed in its premises in 50 UK cities.
"Wireless technologies are breaking the restrictions [on last mile telecommunications access] globally and wireless technologies will offer enhanced service and cost efficiency," said Steve McKeaveney, global head of technical consulting at Vanco, to Computer Weekly.
"Wireless will be an enabler in developing regions," he added.
The deal would make Vanco the first managed services provider to implement a WiMAX corporate Wide Area Network solution, the company claims.
