Computer recycling for servers that are over three years old is essential, it has been claimed.
According to IT services provider Memset, swapping to energy efficient servers will save 400kWh per year in electricity and provide between two and four times the performance,
The group claims power requirements of basic servers have halved while their performance has doubled in the last 18 months, meaning that simply replacing three-year-old servers with modern ones makes environmental and economic sense.
Tony Roberts, chief executive of charity Computer Aid, said that recycled computers from the UK can be used in African schools to meet demand on the continent and improve the education of children there.
Earlier this week, data centre consolidation specialist RichardsoNEyres claimed server consolidation can improve organisations' carbon footprints as well as cutting costs.
Chief executive of the firm Adam Kemp said corporations should organise their environmental policies to maximise their ability to reduce their energy costs and CO2 emissions.
