Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) need to make a priority of instigating a disaster recovery strategy in order to ensure they can survive such eventualities, Hitachi Data Systems have said.
The firm's UK managing director Steve Murphy said: "Putting in place a tested business continuity plan is extremely important for all businesses," adding that this was especially true for SMEs, which "rarely have the reserves necessary to pick the business up after a disaster".
Mr Murphy added that the "key" element of such a plan should be data backup, which would ensure information is not lost in the event of incidents such as flood or fire.
However, he said, at present only 33 per cent of such firms list the issue of disaster recovery among their data management concerns.
Research from the British Chambers of Commerce has found that 90 per cent of businesses that lose data as a result of a disaster end up closing within two years, while 80 per cent without a good recovery plan have to shut within a year of suffering a flood or fire.
