A former security officer at chemical firm ICI has criticised the lack of a national e-crime unit, according to reports.
This came before the announcement from a top Met police officer outlining details of the new unit to be created, which will require £5.3 million of funding, reports ITPro.
Paul Simmonds, the former chief information and security officer at ICI, said that the unit should be set up, adding "I hope that the government sees sense" and that the decision is "a no brainer", reports Computerworld.
It seems they did as detective superintendent at the Met police, Charlie McMurdie, announced the details of the plans yesterday.
"The unit needs about 50 staff, not all police officers but people from industry as well," he said.
However, the police have yet to announce where the money would come from, with them having only budgeted for £1.3 million.
ITPro reports that it is hoped some funding will come from the home office, with additional money from industry and vendors.
