The IT industry needs to push the European Union into creating legislation on reducing carbon emissions as currently the sector is environmentally unsustainable.
John Doyle, sustainable development policy coordinator for the European Commission (EC), said that IT is one of the large hurdles standing in the way of climate change, reports Computer World UK.
Mr Doyle added that "deep structural change was needed" for the IT industry to be able to reduce the rate of carbon emissions in Western Europe.
"We must put IT at the core of energy efficiency to combat climate change. But it's unclear on how we need to re-engineer ICT to transition to become a 'low carbon, high growth economy'," he told the website.
The industry must "bully" the EU to do the right thing, said Mr Doyle, adding that the industry had a "social duty to address this".
Intellect, the UK's industry trade association recently published the first white paper on the issue, which said that low-carbon technologies need to be adopted soon or "irreversible damage" could be caused.
