Firms looking to take advantage of email marketing are likely to avoid social networking campaigns during the current uncertain economic climate as their effectiveness is unknown, it has been claimed.
Mike Hare, research director at statistical consultancy DataTalk Research, said although firms are keen to invest in social networking as a platform, it is a difficult market to enter and return on investment is hard to identify.
"In an environment like we're in at the moment, where spend is coming under increasingly microscopic inspection, most planners will try to steer clear of areas which are very difficult to police, manage and track," he added.
Mr Hare went on to say internet usage is going up as a result of the use of social networking sites.
Research from internet media and market research company Nielsen Online indicates Britons are spending four per cent more time online every month than they did a year ago.
