Employees are increasingly putting their companies at risk by bringing in personal flash drives, according to a data storage expert.
A survey by San Disk has shown that IT managers do not realise the extent to which employees are bringing their own memory sticks in, with them estimating that 35 per cent use their personal devices.
However, 77 per cent of people actually bring their own storage devices to use for work purposes, with customer records and financial information being copied over to them.
Business plans, employee records, intellectual property and marketing plans are also copied onto the devices.
San Disk has warned that due to the portable nature of the flash drives they present a high security risk to companies.
The survey showed that one in ten people had found a flash drive in a public place, with 55 per cent adding that they would view the information on it.
San Disk was founded in 1988 and claims to be the world's largest supplier of flash memory data storage products.
