Europe has taken a large lead over the US in data centre virtualisation because of the greater security provided, it has been claimed.
Zeus Networks vice president of technology strategy, Dave Asprey, told vnunet that Europeans were more concerned about security whereas the US government had "sold it to the highest bidder".
"The privacy regulations in Europe mean that virtualisation is a great way to provide added security because the data never leaves the data centre," he added.
In contrast, said Mr Asprey, in America laptops would hold the information rather than this being stored centrally, leaving the data at risk of being stolen and "sold on eBay".
Among the other benefits of virtualisation is the capacity for disaster recovery, by allowing IT services to be run away from premises which may have been affected by floods, fire or other incidents.
Newcastle-under-Lyme council has now implemented such a virtualised disaster recovery system, publictechnlogy.net reports.
