The managed security focus of UK businesses is on external threats, despite the greater likelihood of companies falling prey to an internal breach, a new study reveals.
Research carried out by IT security firm the Wick Hill Group indicates 79 per cent of firms rated securing their network against external attack as very important, while authenticating remote users was rated important by 67 per cent and securing remote access was rated very important by 75 per cent.
In a statement the firm added: "Despite consistent research which shows that internal threat is a greater IT security risk than external threat, the survey showed that external threat is still perceived as the greater problem."
The company went on to say this may be partly due to media focus on external security problems suffered by a range of high-profile organisations.
Earlier this week, industry analyst Gartner claimed the global economic downturn shows no sign of causing a recession in IT spending and IT spending is set to exceed $3.4 trillion (£1.8 trillion) this year.
