Financial companies spent the most on servers last year than any other sector, according to a new report.
Heavy spending in the server industry was seen in 2007, compared to the previous year, with financial industries spending more than communications ones, reports Gartner.
The companies spent £13.9 billion (£7 billion) on servers last year, equating to a quarter of all server sales.
It compares to $7.9 billion spent by the communications industry and $6.4 billion by the public sector.
Kiyomi Yamada, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "The recent US credit crunch negatively impacted the US financial services sector's server spending toward the end of 2007.
"However we did not see serious spending cuts on a global basis."
IDC, a research firm, has recently predicted that server spending would slow this year in face of an impending recession.
The company reported that 2007 was one of the strongest years in the server industry.
