A new round of attacks on websites has left more than half a million pages under threat, meaning users' PCs could become infected.
Paul Ferguson, a network architect with anti-virus vendor Trend Micro, said an on-going campaign had caused many new domains to host malware, with even more popping up each day.
All of the infected sites are running the open source message forum 'phpBB' in a campaign which dates back to January.
"We're not sure if it's [because of] improper configuration of phpBB or a vulnerability. Open-source applications like phpBB tend to be targeted quite a bit," said Mr Ferguson.
He added that some of the infected sites had previously been attacked for use in "keyword search ranking manipulation".
More than one type of malware is also being served in the campaign, according to Mr Ferguson, contrary to most people's perceptions.
Microsoft data recently showed that businesses face new attacks from web-based criminals, as malware distributors have changed their tactics.
