The level of demand for freelance interim IT directors has soared in recent months, as organisations implement new systems.
As the number of new IT projects starting increases sharply, so too have jobs for freelance IT workers, pushing wages up by more than a third (34 per cent) to £80 an hour.
Research conducted for the Association of Technology Staffing Companies (ATSCo) by iProfileStats indicates that hiring interim directors enables companies to access the skills and experience needed to lead individual projects.
ATSCo chief executive, Ann Swain, said: "The work of IT departments tends to be project-led with each stage of an IT project requiring different skills, so interim staff are a useful tool, which has become more widespread as the market has picked up."
IT departments are coming under increasing pressure to reduce permanent staffing costs and are turning to freelance and interim staff for new projects.
However, plans announced by HM Revenue & Customs could add millions to company bills for temporary IT staff who do not operate through limited companies.
