PC Tools has said that threat lists warning of potential and current malware attacks are "of no practical use".
The security vendor said that rather than measuring the underlying danger of a particular type of malware they measure volumes, reports Techworld.
Simon Clausen, chief executive officer of PC Tools, said: "Threat analysis is highly complex. There was a time when volume alone was an acceptable indicator of the level of threat."
"But the threat landscape has changed significantly and there are a number of additional parameters, besides volume, which are equally, if not more important," he told the website.
The lists are produced regularly by security vendors to warn consumers and businesses of dangerous attacks.
Carole Theriault of Sophos said that most reputable companies would not produce the lists without "giving context or explanations".
She added that they provide a "great way" to convey the importance of security.
According to the Global Threat Report, produced by McAfee, malware is getting more sophisticated across international borders.
