Managed CCTV could soon improve, with scientists having developed cameras which can hear as well as see.
Scientists at the University of Portsmouth have developed the idea, which may be introduced into the thousands of cameras across the UK.
The developers say the new system could mean managed CCTV cameras adjust their position according to noise, being attracted to sounds like glass smashing or shouting.
Dr David Brown, director at the university, said: "The longer artificial intelligence is in the software the more it learns. We are only listening for specific words associated with violence, not full conversations."
He added that later on the technology could become so sophisticated that it will be able to identify specific words or violent sounds.
The three-year project could lead to an increase in the number of crimes captured by the technology, say the scientists.
In related news, businesses in Hampshire have recently benefited from increased funding for managed CCTV services, according to the Bournemouth Echo.
