The first sign of Windows 7's release has been seen, with the software giant giving a version of it to the US government.
Microsoft's move has fuelled speculation that Vista's successor may be arriving on the market earlier than predicted.
The test version of the operating system has been handed over to a committee in the company's anti-trust hearing.
A report on court filings said: "The TC [technical committee] has begun to review Windows 7 itself. Microsoft recently supplied the TC with a build of Windows 7, and is discussing TC testing going forward."
The government's possession of the next-generation system means that the release could be brought forward to next year, following a lack of enthusiasm for their Vista product.
Some of the features predicted to be in the system include a virtual desktop and a tabbed Windows Explorer.
The hearing regards Microsoft's compliance with an anti-trust settlement made by the US in 2002, to ensure their products do not have an advantage over and above other software.
