Microsoft has denied claims that weaknesses in its Web and SQL servers had been exploited to hack hundreds of web pages.
The computing giant was accused of vulnerabilities in its products causing attacks on legitimate web sites, including some belonging to the United Nations.
Security firms like Panda Security have estimated the number of infected sites to be 282,000, with F-Secure saying it could be half a million.
Ryan Sherstobitoff, who works for Panda, said: "It's not like this is a brand-new problem. But Microsoft has already issued a security advisory that said they are investigating public reports of problems with IIS. This seems to be related to that advisory."
However, Bill Sisk, a communications manager at Microsoft's Security Response Centre, said the company's investigation had shown that there are no new or unknown vulnerabilities being exploited.
"This wave is not a result of a vulnerability in Internet Information Services or Microsoft SQL Server," he added.
