Microsoft has released the Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the public a week after it had originally been due.
It is now available through Windows Update or from the Microsoft download centre. The release comes after the company announced last week that it was postponing the sale because it had uncovered a glitch that caused its point-of-sale software to lose or corrupt the data on both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1.
Chris Keroack, XP SP3's release manager said at the time: "In the last few days we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1."
Microsoft recently announced that it will cease to sell the Windows XP operating system from June 30th this year and users will have to convert to Vista, which has sold 140 million copies globally in 2008, according to CNN.
