Microsoft has warned businesses that the virtualisation technology is currently expensive and questions whether it is cost-effective.
Barbara Gordon, vice president for enterprise sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, told CIO that "existing players" in the market are expensive, saying chief information officers should question the cost-effective value of the technology.
Ms Gordon added that she felt Microsoft's additions to the market would add value, although would not discuss individual product points for the company's Hyper V product.
"The fact is that it is the technologies that work well together and have good functionality that will let the user spend time adding value. So weve got a very broad offering," she told the website.
Microsoft's Hyper V product will be launched later this year, it is expected, with criticism being faced that it was not launched alongside Windows Server 2008 last month.
Gartner, the analyst firm, said that they expect Microsoft to gain large mid-market share following the launch of the product.
"VMware has been operating in a virtualisation market essentially without competition for six years," the firm added.
Microsoft bought software developer Kidaro last week, in an attempt to increase its presence in the virtualisation market.
