The London Olympics is set to get a managed WAN service from Nortel in what is expected to be a "great public showcase of integrated communications".
Nortel is set to supply managed WAN services alongside partners like Atos Origin, Samsung and BT.
Tim Watkins, president of the northern region of the firm, said over 3,500 LAN switches, 16,500 VoIP handsets and 1,000 wireless access points will be provided for the Games.
It is hoped they will be energy efficient and cut usage by 40 per cent, which Nortel claims any other provider could offer.
The telecoms company has yet to reveal how much the network will cost to put together but the website reports they will probably pay for it themselves.
BT has already been appointed as the 2012 communications partner, with the two firms having already worked together.
According to TMCnet, Nortel are expecting to provide services to four billion people in the deal.
