The PCs industry is set to grow by over ten per cent this year, totalling 293 million units.
Research firm Gartner has said that mobile PCs are showing "strong momentum" and that desktop PC activity is "stirring".
The mobile PC market is driving growth in the industry, due to advances in technology and a reduction in price of the PCs.
In addition, replacement desktop PCs are also set to drive the industry, with Gartner predicting a replacement cycle in late 2008 to early 2010.
However, the firm warns that growth could be a single figure if the current economic slowdown continues.
Factors contributing to this could include a downturn in Chinese markets following the Olympics, the rising price of oil and a US recession.
Gartner recently warned that IT manager should cut costs ahead of an economic downturn.
The research firm said companies should create two budgets, one based on business being normal and the other on the occurrence of a recession.
