The Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust (PCT) has signed a new agreement with BT, under which it will have access to the NHS national broadband network knows an N3.
BT is set to host IP telephony services for the trust, with the N3 Hosted Voice Service allowing for reduced administration costs.
Kam Ryatt, associate director of ICT or the PCT, said: "By converging our voice and data over the same single network we have delivered a simple, cost-effective and highly efficient way to manage our communications needs."
The trust will no longer have to "worry" about the day-to-day running of its telephony infrastructure, he added, stating that this will free "valuable resources" that can be directed elsewhere.
In related news, Computerweekly.com recently reported that the Institution of Chartered Surveyors installed a new IP-based telephony system in its call centre.
Darren Smith, project manager for the organisation, said the efficiency of the institution's call handling was "vital" to its overall success.
