More companies will deploy virtual offices, but firms must plan for the practice before it begins.
Some people are against the idea as face-to-face interaction will be lost, according to Gartner, but the research firm predicts that during this year 41.4 million employees will engage in the practice.
Andrew Walker, research director for the firm, said: "Once a company decides to transition from a traditional physical office environment to a virtual one, a business case should be prepared that presents potential benefits for both the enterprise and its employees."
He added that presently most companies only offer the practice on an ad-hoc rating at the manager's discretion.
By planning, a firm can see the advantages of "a well-planned transition" and that a more formal approach can help employees get a better work/life balance.
Gartner cites one of the advantages as saving money as accommodation costs are saved for the company and commuting costs for the employee.
A recent survey of business executives found that 91 per cent think there is a bigger risk of data being exposed when networks are made available to remote or home workers.
