The global transition to next generation networks is being driven by a desire to control high-bandwidth applications and enrich the range of options available to consumers, according to a new study.
Research carried out by IT research group Heavy Reading indicates policy control is an increasingly important aspect of the shift to an all internet protocol next generation network.
Graham Finnie, chief analyst at the company and author of the report, said flexible rules-based policy engines are going to become more important in future.
"Policy matters more than ever before and centralised policy servers are likely to be an important element in helping [telecommunications carriers] increase the value of their propositions," he continued.
The report went on to say most service providers believe they should control access to network resources, applications and subscribers more intelligently.
Earlier this week, a secure system of next generation networks was identified by IT analysts at a Cambridge research laboratory.
