Companies must offer IT professionals effective reward programs if they are to attract and retain the right people with the right skills to fulfil business needs.
That's the view of Gartner Executive Programs, a unit of analyst firm Gartner, which found that rewards were vital to keep employees motivated and engaged.
As more and more business look to increase their IT spend and to rely on IT to produce cost savings and boost business, trustworthy and competent IT professionals are vital.
Monetary rewards are important for these individuals, but non-monetary rewards, such as career development, recognition, and work/life balance, are "increasingly effective in helping to create a more personally rewarding total work experience and contributing to a more engaged and satisfied IT workforce", according to Gartner's Lily Mok.
IT and HR leaders need to bear in mind three important factors when establishing employee programs, Gartner argues.
Firstly, they must identify the cultural change required to support the initiative; next, they must understand that managers are the key link in a successful program; and lastly they should involve employees to increase the chance of program success.
Ms Mok recommends "a thoughtful and rigorous approach" to implementing work experience reward programs.
