Businesses face new attacks from web-based criminals, with Microsoft data showing that malware distributors have changed their tactics recently.
Information reported to Microsoft from Windows users at the end of last year show that the number of Trojan downloader programmes needing to be deleted off systems increased by 300 per cent.
Web attacks have increased as system administrators become savvier at blocking email attacks.
The new attack comes in the form of messages which lead the user to a malicious website.
Jimmy Kuo, principal architect with Microsoft's Malware Protection Centre, said that in the six month period at the end of last year one in every 123 computers had malware on it.
The data also showed that phishing is moving from email onto social networking sites, with 75 per cent to 80 per cent of the pages being in English.
It has recently been reported that a new method of hacking computer has arisen, by hacking the micro-processor.
