Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) remain confused about voice over internet protocol (VoIP) services, a new report states.
A recent study by telecommunications consultant Savatar Research found that many SMBs are now in a position to adopt VoIP systems and uptake is growing fast, but difficulties in purchasing technology are hampering the market.
A total of 70 per cent of small company decision makers said that they were still unsure what their best options regarding VoIP are and where to go to purchase equipment and software. However, those businesses that had switched to internet telephony reported being highly satisfied with VoIP and would recommend it to their peers.
The report states that VoIP providers are failing to generate demand for services in small firms and are deterring many with quote processes that can take more than a month to complete.
Savatar president, John Macario, said: "SMBs need to be educated about the benefits of VoIP; they'll buy from the provider that can help them make the decision on products that are economically advantageous for the SMB's business."
The number of SMBs deploying VoIP technology rose from 15 per cent in the first quarter of 2006 to 17 per cent of the 560 firms polled during the second three months of the year.
VoIP services have markedly improved in recent years and take-up has risen steeply with levels of broadband subscriptions. A growing number of companies offer VoIP services and technologies to businesses and individuals and the market is becoming increasingly competitive.
