A growing number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are making the switch from land lines to voice over internet protocol (VoIP) telephony, according to one analyst.
The benefits of cheaper calls to landlines and mobiles as well as free computer to computer calls is an appealing way of cutting costs for SMEs but it also poses a challenge for the telecommunication providers.
An upcoming report from Ovum suggests that while SME's are "keen on VoIP", instead of using tailored systems with a private branch exchange (PBX).
"The bad news for established telcos is that many small businesses are turning to...internet voice providers for their VoIP services rather than business grade solutions from telcos," said Pauline Trotter at Ovum.
However, SMEs using free services like Skype are not getting all the features the established telcos offer such as unified communications.
Allowing for conferencing, collaboration and mobility features are all points which the VoIP companies need to present to SMEs to persuade them of the value of a bespoke service geared towards business.
As security concerns grow, SMEs should also be aware that VoIP solutions designed for business can also improve security.
