Server consolidation can improve organisations' carbon footprints as well as cutting costs, it has been claimed.
According to data centre consolidation specialists, RichardsoNEyres, corporations should organise their environmental policies to maximise their ability to reduce their energy costs and CO2 emissions.
Director of the firm Adam Kemp said: "While computers may drive efficiency, the data centres that run businesses are often far from efficient.
"They are at the heart of environmental challenges created by IT but the average retailer just does not have the necessary knowledge to bring about change."
He added that firms should seek specialist help in order to improve their environmental position while also reducing operating costs and improving IT service delivery.
The firm went on to say server consolidation, either in terms of moving remote IT facilities into a centrally-managed location or combining existing data centres, can improve companies' environmental position, simplify management and reduce costs.
Earlier this week, Data Storage Connection claimed server consolidation and disaster recovery are the main drivers behind virtualisation.
