Royal Dutch Shell has signed outsourcing deals worth $4.2 billion (£2.1 billion) over five years with three global IT and telecommunications suppliers.
T-Systems International GmbH, AT&T and Electronic Data Systems have been contracted to make "significant improvements" to Shell's efficiency and productivity.
In one of the largest outsourcing deals of the last five years, around 3,000 IT jobs will be transferred to the service providers. Shell will retain 600 IT infrastructure employees.
Shell said that from July 1st AT&T will be responsible for network and telecommunications, whereas T-Systems will manage hosting and storage.
EDS will support Shell's business by managing end-user computing services integration and infrastructure services and will enable high-speed desktop deployments to existing, remote and new locations using Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.
Shell CIO Alan Matula said the deal will allow "Shell IT to focus on information technology that drives competitive position in the oil and gas market, whilst suppliers focus on improving essential IT capability".
