The Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service Skype is ideal for students but not suitable for businesses, according to one expert.
Colin Duffy, chief executive of Voipfone, said that while it is a "wonderful little PC application" Sykpe is "rubbish" for business use.
He added that the technology can slow down systems and has poor call quality.
"As a business application, it's rubbish. Basically the call quality isn't good enough, businesses don't want to only be able to answer their phones when their PCs are switched on and they want to have their telephony separate from everything else," said Mr Duffy.
If the program detected the user had a lot of bandwidth it will start routing other people's call through your network, according to the expert.
However, Mr Duffy did add that for students "it's a wonderful little PC application which has changed an awful lot of the telephone industry".
At the end of 2006 20 per cent of people were using VoIP technology, compared to just 14 per cent in 2005.
