Over 90 per cent of email was spam and the number of malware incidents multiplied by 16 last year, according to software company CA.
The research conducted between January and October last year showed that trojans were beaten by malicious spyware as the most common form of malware.
Of the 90 per cent of emails that were spam, 80 per cent had links to malware or malicious sites, while the quality of spam has also improved making it harder to detect, said the report.
The internet security report also predicted that botnets will become more prolific in the coming year as they will become harder to detect.
Warnings also came that Windows Vista users could be at risk as its market share grows; according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology 20 vulnerabilities were reported last year.
CA conducted its 2008 internet security outlook report based on feedback from its customers and consumers in 2007.
A separate study by IronPort has found that URL viruses have risen by at least 250 per cent last year, according to InfoWorld.
