A telecommunications operator has opted to outsource the IT maintenance on its PBX.
In a bid to cut operating margins to above 35 per cent by 2009, Elisa, Finland's largest telecoms operator, is outsourcing many of its business processes including parts of its IT maintenance.
To cut IT costs, services providing firm Ericsson will take responsibility for maintenance of the standard PBX and internet protocol-based PBXs which Elisa's business customers use.
By outsourcing the remote maintenance and change management, Elisa hopes to save money on staff and will transfer 56 employees to Ericsson.
Another advantage of outsourcing the IT maintenance is that it means that the company does not have to invest in its own upgrades or developing expertise.
Instead, it benefits from the provider's pooled expertise while its systems benefit - without the expenditure of hardware or software investment - when the provider updates its systems for all its clients.
