The prime minister has warned that the UK is at risk from a state-sponsored cyber attack.
Gordon Brown said funding on IT would be increased in an effort to tackle these threats, after it was published in the National Security Strategy.
The cabinet office said that the threat of attack over the internet is increasing and that a terrorist cyber attack is a possibility.
"As economies and societies grow increasingly dependent on national and global electronic information and communication systems, it becomes even more important to manage the risk of disruption to their integrity and availability through cyber attack, whether terrorist, criminal, or state-led," said the report.
Mr Brown said that a new approach to the threats was needed in order to tackle them: "a radically updated and much more co-ordinated response is now required".
The government has said it will work with both public and private sector workers to protect businesses, but did not say were funds would be invested.
Last September it was revealed that ten Whitehall departments were being targeted by computer hackers, reports the Telegraph.
