Cheshire county council has experienced improved staff flexibility and moved towards meeting environmental targets by installing a secure socket layer (SSL) virtual private network (VPN).
The installation of the new system means that staff can work remotely more comfortably, using their old equipment.
Previously council workers in distributed locations, including working from home, had to use a standard phone line to get to the council network but now, using the VPN they can log in from any computer.
IT security and policy manager Colin Rowland told the Computing news service that the introduction of the secure technology had helped create a home working platform like the one in the office.
Using the VPN instead of the old system has also increased the resilience of the connection, meaning less wasted time.
And the benefits extend beyond staff work-life balance.
"It helps us meet environmental targets set by the government to reduce travel," said Rowland.
