Vista users can now receive the first Service Pack (SP1) via its Automatic Update system.
Microsoft announced the move yesterday which means the update will be downloaded on any PC with the automatic feature turned on.
However, SP1 is being released in stages so not all users will be able to access it yet.
Microsoft has said this is to "ensure a seamless download experience", but a timeline is not available.
Forrester, the research company, has predicted that more businesses will upgrade to the operating system now that SP1 is available.
The chief executive of Microsoft Steve Balmer said that the Vista system is "a work in progress".
"It's a very important piece of work. We did a lot of things right and have a lot of things we need to learn from."
Microsoft has also revealed that it is struggling to attract users to switch to Vista, with only 6.3 per cent of businesses using the system.
