Microsoft Vista's first Service Pack (SP1) has been released to consumers, following an eventful path from production, but it is still not available to everyone.
The upgrade is now available through Windows Update and is posted on the company's website for Vista users.
Nick White, a Vista programme manager, said: "Today, you can now download Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update."
However, some users will not see the update in their list because their PC has a defective drive.
"Windows Update will recognise PCs with drivers that may be problematic and postpone offering SP1 to those PCs until it has installed corrected drivers or other applicable updates," said Mr White.
He said that for blocked users the update would be available in "a few weeks".
The SP1 was released to manufacturers last month, but since then has been the subject of piracy, corrupting computers, further delays and accidental releases.
Amazon predicted yesterday that the update would be made available today.
