The chief executive officer of Microsoft has said the Vista operating system is "a work in progress".
Almost 18 months after being released the businesses the software has been criticised by Steve Ballmer.
"It's a very important piece of work. We did a lot of things right and have a lot of things we need to learn from," he stated.
One Jupiter Research analyst, Michael Gartenberg, told Seattlepi.com: "It's hard to imagine that a comment like that is the type of thing that is going to instill greater confidence."
Mr Ballmer said that Vista needs improvements in its system performance, battery life the system's size and compatibility.
The comments were made before Microsoft stops selling PC versions of its XP operating system, ignoring some efforts to reverse the decision.
In his speech to the MVP Summit, he added that the company would not leave it five years between releasing operating systems, as it did with Vista.
Microsoft has recently revealed that it is struggling to attract users to switch to Vista, with only 6.3 per cent of businesses using the system at the end of last year.
