The rapid growth of hosted Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology is set to continue, according to a new report, with projected revenues expected to exceed $2 billion (£1 billion) in the US market by 2010.
Research from market analysis firm In-Stat indicated that it was small businesses that were the key driver of the trend towards hosted IP telephony, as many smaller companies found that they were not able to manage voice systems themselves.
In-Stat analyst David Lemelin said: "As business managers assess their resident ability to deploy and manage enterprise-like VoIP services, many are finding themselves lacking the capital and expertise required.
"As a result, hosted VoIP solutions are becoming more attractive."
While cost savings were the main attraction of hosted IP telephony for most businesses, many found the value associated with business-grade solutions appealing as well, the study showed.
It also found that multi-location businesses and those with mobile or distributed employees were the most attracted to hosted VoIP solutions.
