The low upfront cost and reduced risks associated with software as a service (SaaS) may make it an attractive option under the deteriorating economic conditions.
A survey by BIW Technologies, a UK based SaaS provider, predicted that annual revenue for software in the UK could double to £2.5 billion over the next three years.
Nearly 70 per cent of the 300 IT directors surveyed thought that a third of their software needs would be provided by SaaS by 2013, compared with the current 15 per cent.
However, more than two-thirds of survey respondents also thought that since SaaS is hosted online, it could be subject to hacking, presenting a greater security threat than traditional software.
Chief executive officer of BIW Technologies, Colin Smith, said SaaS could help companies cut costs and reduce IT-related risks, as well as limit an organisation's carbon footprint.
"The security of our clients' data is of paramount importance to us, and in eight years of operation no successful attack has been made on our system and no client has lost data," he commented.
