Despite a majority of young girls thinking technology is "cool" most do not want to pursue a career in the industry.
Just over a quarter of girls say they have considered a career in the sector, compared with over half of all boys, according to research from Research in Motion.
Over two-thirds of girls cited a lack of female role-models in the industry as one reason behind this lack of interest, with 55 per cent thinking there should be more female business role-models and fewer celebrity ones.
Maggie Philbin, who used to work on Tomorrow's World, said: "We have a huge responsibility to promote positive examples of what women can aim to be."
She added that by highlighting individual success cases young women are more likely to follow in that career path, by "encouraging and inspiring" them.
In total, 43 per cent of young people do not want a career in technology as they see it as not being exciting, with 30 per cent thinking the industry is "geeky".
Recently, figures showed that the number of people looking to work in the IT industry has risen by 17 per cent so far this year.
